As a mother of three, I know a lot about toddler tantrums and how annoying and embarrassing it is for parents. Even if you are with a family member or your best friend. When your young kids throw tantrums it can make you feel frustrated and overwhelmed at the situation, specially if it’s in a public place. People stare, they judge and you might very well feel defeated as a parent. I want to assure you that I’m going to share with you how to deal with toddler public tantrums so that you can take control of the situation.
I have come to terms that throwing tantrums for kids is “normal”, there are no if’s or buts about it. Whether you like it or not, you will experience it at one point or another in your motherhood life. Yup! The joys of motherhood! For the most part my children behave pretty good in public, in our house trust me it’s a different story. I have learned a few things to help me out when it comes to dealing a toddler tantrum whether it’s indoors or out in public.

5 Effective Tips To Help You Deal With Public Tantrums
1. Stay Calm
We need to stay calm because two people yelling ( you and your child) will not get you anywhere. Plus, you will get more frustrated at the situation then actually finding a solution to it. I usually just breathe and take my time, and just think about what I am going to say. I really try my best not to yell, get frustrated or stressed out about it. So instead I stay calm and it helps me take control of the situation more effectively.

2. Plan ahead
There is no planning ahead to prepare you for your child’s tantrums, I know I know! Planning ahead for me is taking extra snacks, some toys, juice just to try to avoid any public tantrums. Let’s face it, sometimes our kids throw tantrums because they want us to buy them a toy, candy, anything of that nature. So prepare in advance.

3. Ask your child to talk and not cry, scream or even kick
I learned this tip from my oldest sister who is a pre-kindergarten teacher and soon to be a daycare provider. Every time my kids cry or scream, she always says ” no no, use your words “. It works every time! Gosh, auntie powers. So, when your child is screaming or crying, simply ask them to breathe and to talk instead of crying because you will understand them better.
I sometimes get on my knees and hug my twins and ask what’s wrong and I just go down the line asking them if they want milk, juice, sleep, you know things like that. I have to really work extra hard with my 2 year old twins because sometimes for me is hard to understand why they are cranky and throwing tantrums.
4. What does your child need
Most of the time when your child is throwing tantrums is because they need or want something. Try to figure out what it is that has them in that situation. I know that my 6 year old gets super cranky when she is hungry, I wonder who she got that from, my husband! (who said that?!) So the first thing I do, when I see her starting to get cranky or even cry, is ask her if she is hungry. So figuring out what your child needs will help you deal with your child’s tantrums more effectively.

5. Set behavior expectations and consequences
One great way to limit toddler public temper tantrums is to set behavior expectations for your kids. You just simply tell them how you expect them to behave and if they do not follow through there will be consequences. For example, let’s say you are going to take your kids to Toys R’ Us, you tell them that they can only choose one toy and nothing more. If they start to cry or have a toddler meltdown, you will not take them again for a long time. This clearly sets the expectations and the consequences and your child will for the most part behave and not throw tantrums next time you take them out to the store. My hubby and I often do this before leaving the house because it’s very effective and it works!
