1.No food or fluids for an hour after vomiting
This one is a must and I learned it the hard way. When My youngest daughter had the stomach virus a couple of years ago, I kept giving her water to drink. I gave her ginger ale soda because I thought it would help keep her hydrated. It only made it worst. She kept on vomiting every time I gave her something to drink.
So, this time around, I didn’t give her anything to drink until after an hour of the last time she vomited. If she hasn’t vomited it only means that her stomach is recovering.

2.Activated charcoal
Another way to treat and cure the stomach bug is to take activated charcoal. My daughter is 6 years old and so I gave her half of the powder that was inside of the pill and mixed it with water. It really is amazing and helped her stop vomiting. She vomited once after taking it with water but then after that, she stopped and felt so much better. She was even playing and was hungry too!
Activated charcoal helps rid the body of unwanted substances and helps treat poisoning. *Consult your child’s doctor if it’s safe for her to use.*
3. Chamomile tea with raw honey and fresh ginger
I love drinking tea but my kids not so much. So, I made sure to give my daughter a few sips at a time of the chamomile tea. This way I can see if it made her feel better and if her stomach could handle it. Chamomile tea helps promote digestive health and has a calming effect. Along with other great benefits. It’s also safe for children to drink 🙂
Ginger is great because it helps to reduce inflammation and promote digestion by relieving nausea and vomiting.
4. Keep other siblings away
I know this may be a hard one because how do you tell your child she can’t play with her other siblings? Gosh! But, try your best to keep them away until your sick child stops vomiting. This will assure that her germs and virus does not spread to the entire family.
5. Rest and more rest
Try having your child lay down to rest. Resting is so important specially when being sick. It helps body to recuperate from everything it’s going through. Your child can rest on her bed or living room couch, making her as comfortable as possible is a must.
6. Drink lots of fluids
I prefer giving my daughter water and tea which will help the body hydrate. Since vomiting will make your child loose most of its fluids and dehydrate them. Drinking water, pedialyte and tea is going to help your child recuperate from the stomach bug.
Of course make sure that the fluid intake happens after it has been an hour since your child last vomited.
7. Detox chicken noodle soup
I remember when I had the stomach bug when I was younger (I’m petrified of vomiting, who else?) My grandmas and mom would make me soup with lots of fresh garlic! It definitely helped me feel much better which was amazing.
So, I did just that for my youngest daughter and for my entire family, ha! It really is nutritious and healthy. I added a lot of fresh garlic and ginger to my detox chicken noodle soup. Also, celery, onions, bell peppers, carrots, potatoes, chicken and cilantro. It’s called a detox chicken noodle soup. I only gave my daughter the broth though 🙂
8. Eat bland and soft foods
Once your child is feeling better and is hungry. Start by giving her soft foods like applesauce, gelatin, banana, toast and such. You may want to stay giving your child these types of food until the next day, just to make sure that the stomach is ready to start eating solids again.
9. crystallized ginger
Consuming ginger has so many benefits like using small doses of ginger may relieve gastrointestinal irritation.Ginger can reduce the likelihood of stomach acid flowing up into the esophagus (source)
My stomach was feeling a little uneasy and I ate a crystallized ginger and it made me feel so much better. I’m not joking! I also gave a small piece to my daughter and she felt better as well.
10.Take a nice warm bath
You may want to take or send your child to take a nice warm bath. This can be done after she is feeling better and is not vomiting. Taking a bath is going to make your child feel relaxed and calm. And it will also help her sleep better at night after a long sick day.
Cleaning your house during and after the stomach bug has hit your home
So when my daughter woke up with a tummy ache and followed by the vomiting, I knew I had to run into action, ha! So, what is one way to prevent the virus from spreading? Is to disinfect your home immediately! Well at least that’s what I did!
I disinfected the bathroom where she was vomiting in, because my other kids would use it and I couldn’t check everytime they did. So, I would go in with my disinfecting wipes right after my sick daughter used it.
Areas to disinfect:
- The toilet, bathroom sink and door handles.
- Broom and mop the floors (if vomit got on it)
- Wash the bedsheets, pillow cases and comforter of the sick child. Viruses spreads and so their bedsheets and such have the virus on them. Wash it!
Clean after everyone feels better:
Go back to the bathroom to clean and disinfect it thoroughly one last time!
I know this might sound a bit extreme, my mom told me I was doing too much, lol. But again, I wanted to prevent it from spreading. Luckily my other two children, my hubby and myself didn’t get it. YES!!
That’s it! I really hope these tips can help you cure the stomach bug or virus. I hope you found it helpful!
