Many doctors like to schedule your first prenatal appointment at your 8 week mark. This is because the embryo and heartbeat is usually confirmed and visible at this point. Earlier than that, you might not see a fetus or heartbeat yet.

What can I expect at my 8 week sonogram?
- Your doctor will want your bladder to be full so that your uterus is in a better position
- he/she will use either a transvaginal ultrasound which goes inside your vagina or transabdominal ultrasound which is done over your belly
- your doctor is checking for baby’s heartbeat, gestational sac and making sure there is no abnormalities.

Okay mama, here we go. What will happen when you go to your first prenatal checkup?
1.Urine sample
Starting from today on, your healthcare provider will want you to provide a urine sample. This will confirm your pregnancy. After that, every appointment you have, a urine sample is taken to check the protein levels in your urine. Which may detect kidney problems, infection and beginning of preeclampsia.

2.Ultrasound scan
An ultrasound is done as well to measure your baby, gestational age and make sure your baby is growing healthy. This ultrasound can also give you an accurate due date, how exciting! Baby’s heartbeat and heart rate can also be seen and heard during your 8 week ultrasound appointment.
In order to have the best results, you will need to have a full bladder, which helps your uterus be in a better position for your doctor to check everything he needs to check.

3.Multiple babies?
Surprise, you may have a twin pregnancy, triplets or more! On your 8 week pregnancy ultrasound, the technician may see and confirm that you are carrying multiples! Just letting you know girl!

4. Blood work
Hello blood work, sorry arm. Part of your obstetrician checklist for the 8 week sonogram is to have a full blood work exam done to check blood type, iron deficiency, sexual transmitted disease, hepatitis B and more.

5. Pap smear
At your first prenatal visit you will get a pap smear test done. Don’t worry, I had it done with both of my pregnancies. To test any abnormal cells and make sure everything is normal down there. Very important to do.
6.Questions from your doctor
Your first prenatal appointment may be a long one. So expect about two hours or so to be at your doctors office. Your doctor will ask you some questions regarding your health history and pregnancy history. For example:
- Medications that you are taking
- Any health problems (thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure)
- Pregnancy history (ectopic pregnancy, miscarriages, abortion)
7.Routine checkup
At this time, you will also have routine checkup/tests like checking your blood pressure, height and weight. Pretty standard but nonetheless important.
8.Ask questions
Okay mama, now may be the time to ask questions to your provider. Anything that’s on your mind, just ask or say. It’s important for you to feel comfortable and taken care of by your doctor. You guys have to click. Any questions about your pregnancy, baby and birth are all valid.
During your 8 week ultrasound appointment a lot of things are happening, with you and your growing baby. It’s such an exciting time in your life, so enjoy it and take it a day at a time.
