12 super effective tips to treat and get rid of your child’s cold
1.Avoid going outside
The best way to treat a cold in children and prevent it others to catch a cold is to avoid the outdoors. You want your child to make a full recovery first before going back to school or public places. This will also help prevent the spread of the cold virus. Staying home and making sure your child has everything he/she needs to fully recover, feel better and feel like themselves again is worth staying home for a couple of days.

2.Drink a lot of fluids
Mama, your child needs to stay hydrated in order to feel better and recover quickly from a cold. So making sure your child drinks a lot of fluids is important. You can give them water, orange juice, electrolyte solutions ect.
3.Give them soft foods
Having a cold can sometimes contribute to getting a soar throat, so I like to give my children soft foods that is easier to eat and swallow. Some of the foods consists of mashed potatoes, warm soup, and apple sauce.
4.Use Vicks vapor rub
I Love using this even on myself, you know there was one time that couldn’t sleep without it(I think I was addicted). What I do is that I apply some on my hands then I rub my hands together to evenly spread it and I apply it on my kids. I rub it on their chest and backs because it makes them breath better. I also rub some in their beds where they usually have their heads on because it helps them sleep. The smells is also soothing so is great.
5.Use the nebulizer
The nebulizer is used primary for kids and adults who have asthma. I use it on my kids too even if they don’t have asthma because their pediatrician prescribed it and it works for them to breathe better. You know that with stuffy noses and “bad chest” is hard for the kids to breathe properly so the nebulizer really is a great choice for that. I recommend this even if your child does not have asthma, your pediatrician has to prescribe you the medicine and your child is on their way for better breathing.
6.Warm bath
I use the Johnson’s baby bath for colds to give my kids a bath. It gives a soothing aroma to the whole bathroom and it really works in my opinion. I don’t like to keep my kids for long in the water because they do have a cold so the faster you take them out the better.
7.Make sure they sleep and rest
Getting a good amount of sleep helps everyone to feel better imagine your kids. Make sure they get their naps and they get some rest. They will wake up with more energy and in a better mood. If your child is like my 5 year old that does not take naps then you can just lay your child down on the couch. Put a movie on and turn off the lights, they will get some rest either way.
8.Avoid milk
When my kids were younger (babies and toddler years), every time they had a cold, they would cough a lot. Sometimes they develop phlegm. Drinking milk or having any dairy increases the phlegm. Their pediatrician recommended not to give them a lot of milk. If you have younger children who are still on the bottle or who still drink milk on the daily, A good trick I used to do was to add water to their milk so it wont be that dense. So I add half of the milk in their bottles and then half of water.
9.Use a humidifier
The humidifier is great to have in your child’s room because it adds moisture and cleans the air. Is good to keep the air in the room circulating so the cold virus won’t stay for long and also provides some relief to your child.
10. Disinfect home
Every time my kids get sick with either a cold, fever or stomach virus. I immediately start to disinfect my home. I start with the bathrooms, door knobs, their rooms and work myself to the entire home. This just help me have peace of mind, i think as moms we need peace of mind. So anything helps right?
11.Use a nasal aspirator
Yes this one is a must because it sucks all the boogies out of your child nose. Nasal aspirator has to be on hand because your child will have a running nose. Also they will feel uncomfortable with their runny nose, so having a nasal aspirator will ease the feeling.
12.Cuddles
Always provide your child with a lot of affection when they are sick or in this case have a cold. It is horrible to be sick so a hug and a kiss will go a long way. Relax, make some time for your child. The chores can wait.
